Nonfiction
A nonfiction book is a real book that tells, informs, teaches and explains something that hopefully will be new and factual information for the students.
A book that would be educational for students that is nonfiction would be Senses in the City by, Shelley Rotner. This book is a great way to give you students a new understanding of a different environment.
From personal experiences, I grew up in the city, the noises at night, the busy streets, the different people and cultures. It was something that I was very blessed and grateful for these experiences they helped me with who I am and what understanding I have of the world. When I moved to the small town of West Portsmouth it was such a culture shock to me. No buildings, just fields everywhere. We had to go into town to get to stuff rather than just walking down the road to go to the store. It was a different atmosphere that I don't think many children are aware of.
This book would give students an insight to how students that live in the city have different lives. They wouldn't ride the school bus, maybe the walk, maybe they take a city bus that they have to pay for. In the city, students will find out that it is very busy and people are always on the go, in a small town it has a lower population and the people who live there are typically more inviting and more friendly.
These are different elements of the real world that students should experience. I know that when I was in elementary school, we took a field trip to Columbus to go to COSI, a science museum, and very educational for kids. When I moved to this small town, we went on a field trip to a local farm to check out different crops and we got to take a hay ride. Two completely different experiences because of the resources in each environment.
I would use this book in my classroom to give my students the opportunity to understand the city live and all that comes with it. Let them make connections about what some students experience differently than my students would. You could reflect on this book and ask if any of your students have ever been to a big city and what they liked most about it. You can also ask them to point out any differences they notice that they wouldn't typically see in their normal home setting.
This can also gives your students that haven't been to the city a new perspective on life and enable them to look at the world differently. Maybe incorporate a field trip to the city and ask students to refer back to the book on the similarities and differences between the city and a rural area.
Erika, i think this would be a great book to introduce to students. Coming from a small town our students would get great back ground knowledge of what it is like living in a big city. Great blog!
ReplyDeleteInteresting book choice! I think this is a fantastic way to introduce cultural differences within the classroom and to help them understand the similarities as well, Grerat job!
ReplyDeleteGreat job explaining your book, and using your own experience. I grew up in a city as well, and the noise level in a city and in a small town is very different. This would be a great book for readers in a small town because it can give them the opportunity think about traveling and experience different things. You chose an amazing way to use it in a classroom!
