Grapes of Math by Greg Tang is a playful, story-like adventure through the pages of this book. It will challenge your students to come up with different ways to problem solve in unexpected ways.
An example from the book will explain this "mind-stretching" book of math riddles.
"I stroll along the vineyard path, and there I see the grapes of math! Over head the sun is blazin', soon each grape will be a raisin. How many grapes are on the vine? Counting each takes too much time. Never fear, I have a hunch. There is a match for every bunch."
The Grapes of Math is great way to expose your students to patterns, symmetry, and similar number combinations. In the classroom, you can utilize this book to have a fun read aloud with your students. Work together to problem solve different ways. This will also be beneficial for some of your students in the low performing areas of math. The more advanced students can help by sharing their ideas on getting the answer and allow the other students to work together.
This book sounds very fun to me! I think that the students would get a lot out of it because it makes each page into a rhyme that you have to solve! Great job Erika!
ReplyDeleteI saw this book and thought about doing it but I am glad I did not. I though it was a funny play on words like "The Grapes of Math" instead of "The Grapes of Wrath". At least I thought it was funny. I liked how you pointed out the way math is related to this book by way of mentioning patterns, symmetry, and similar number combinations or multiplication. Good job.
ReplyDeleteErika, I about chose this book for mine too! I love how it teaches different aspects on teaching math and not just one. I think this is a good book, that the students would enjoy.
ReplyDeleteErika, first of all this pun cannot go unnoticed. Outstanding. Second, I really love that you found a book that focuses on more than one aspect of math. It doesn't just touch on addition or counting but it includes multiple things that are important for our students to be learning in a fun and creative way. I love it girly:)
