Faces on the Moon by Bob Crelin is a fun and information book of the different faces of the moon.
Science is my favorite subject, there are so many informational books that you can use for teaching about space and our solar system.
As a student in elementary school I can't say that I remember learning about the faces of the moon until about 8th grade. This book is set for 4th grade students.

The style of writing that Crelin has provided is very playful and poetic like. It rhymes and has easier ways of explaining to the students the different faces and what time of the day that you would experience to see something like that.
The illustrations of this book are done by Leslie Evans and they depict a different way of interpreting the story with the colorful and detailed pictures.

"The moon's first phase, we call it NEW, when moon's between the Sun and you."
This is a quote that I pulled from the book that shows an example of Crelin's way with words. It is a simple way for your students to be able to take in the information and really get a sense of the moon.

When I was in 8th grade I didn't do so well, because they gave us the information on a powerpoint. That's not how I take in information. I need to have examples and hands on activities. I also feel that this approach to learning is a way for students to be able to lock in that engagement into the lesson and they can use this book in their own library for the use of memorizing the faces of the moon.

Early learning of faces of the moon with help students have a better understanding of science in your classroom.

  2. I love how you talked about how you did not learn them very well because it was presented in a PowerPoint. This books sounds like it will really help kids learn about the phases of the moon. This books gives good examples and makes it easier for them to learn them because it includes them as a person in the book. Good job!

  3. Erika, i too can say i don't remember learning about the faces of the moon till about junior high also. I think introducing the faces of the moon in fourth grade or younger grade levels is a great idea because students will have some sort of previous knowledge of this subject before jumping into it in junior high. Great blog!

  4. Erika, I really like your post. It is very informative about the topic of science. I don't think I ever learned about the faces of the moon in any of my classes, so I think this book would even be great for me to read.

  5. I love the way you compared your learning experience to the way you thought it should have been taught. I am not someone who will retain information from slides on a Powerpoint, and we need to keep that in mind about our students. This book looks like a great way to talk about Selenography.
